Edward Eugene "Gene" Williams Obituary

Edward Eugene "Gene" Williams, known affectionately as Gene to his friends and family, passed away peacefully due to a short, but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on December 18, 2023, in Opelika, Alabama. Born on May 24, 1946, in Alexander City, Alabama, Gene's journey through life was marked by an unwavering faith, a deep love for his family, and a generous spirit that touched the lives of many.

Gene leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, exemplified by his loving wife of 42 years, Marilyn Parrish Williams. Together, they built a life filled with joy and cherished memories. He was a proud father to his daughters, Rhonda Crenshaw (Wayne), Shannon Hawkins, Kea Hawkins (Mitchell), and his sons, Eric Williams (Darlene), Tim Williams (Laura), Taylor Williams (Beth). His daughter-in-law, Christy Hawkins, held a special place in his heart. Gene's brother, Eulous Williams, and his very special friend, Kerry Ledbetter, will also feel the absence of his warm presence. His life was further enriched by his 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the values and lessons he instilled in them. Gene also leaves behind his brother and sister in law, Mike Parrish (Brenda).

Gene was preceded in death by his son, Butch Hawkins, and his parents, Howard Williams and Mary Jo Akin. The void left by their absence was filled with the love and support of his family, who became his source of strength and inspiration.

Professionally, Gene was a respected figure in the trucking industry, where he dedicated his career to excellence and integrity, eventually rising to the position of Operations Manager. His work ethic and commitment to his colleagues set a standard that will be remembered and emulated by those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

A devout Christian, Gene's faith was the cornerstone of his existence. His life was a testament to the power of belief and the grace of living a life in service to others. He was a man who truly embodied the words of Mother Teresa, "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." Gene's small acts of kindness, his willingness to help others, and his unwavering support for those in need were the great love he spread throughout his community.

An ardent supporter of Alabama football, Gene's enthusiasm for the game was infectious. His Saturdays in the fall were spent cheering on his beloved team, a tradition he shared with his family and friends. Gene was also renowned for his skills as a Grillmaster, a title he wore with pride as he brought people together with his delicious barbecues.

Those who knew Gene will remember him as a loving, faith-filled, and selfless man. His ability to give without expecting anything in return was a rare quality that made him a beacon of light in the lives of those he touched. His amazing love story with Marilyn, his dedication to his family, and his generous spirit are the hallmarks of a life well-lived.

As we bid farewell to Edward Eugene "Gene" Williams, we celebrate a life that was full of purpose and love. His memory will continue to inspire us to live with kindness, to cherish our loved ones, and to make the world a better place through our actions. Gene's journey on earth has ended, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

A Celebration of Life remembering Gene were held on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. EST at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Valley Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, Gene would have wanted to help the children who receive care at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Please consider a memorial donation in Gene's memory.
