Luther Z. Heath, Jr. Obituary



Luther Z. Heath, Jr., passed away on January 14, 2024, at the age of 103. Born on December 10, 1920, in Fredonia, Alabama, Luther's life was a testament to his enduring spirit and unwavering faith.


Luther was a man of many talents and a heart full of love. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Pearl E. Heath, his son, Olin Phillip Heath, his parents, Luther and Irene Heath, and his siblings, Lewis, Charles, Harry, Ray, Jim, and Martha Loveless. His legacy continues through his devoted children, Julia Magourick, Sally Dejournette, Luther Z. Heath, III, Sara H. Gore (Tommy), his cherished grandchildren, Sheila Bassig, Eva Rackow (Victor), Charles Carnley (Janice), April Turner, Robert Gore (Amy), his eleven great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren, as well as his sister-in-law, Bernice Williams.

Luther's life was marked by service and song. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, with his service taking him across Europe and stationing him in France. After the war, he pursued an education at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, which is now known as Auburn University. There, he honed his skills in sheet metal fabrication. His dedication to his craft was evident as he attended night school while working for Sims Welding and Mechanical, a commitment that lasted until he was 87 years old.

A man of deep faith, Luther was a long-standing member of Plant City Baptist Church and later attended Center Baptist Church in Ridge Grove, where he was affectionately known as the "Ridge Grove Tenor." One of his favorite groups was the Gaither Vocal Band. His love for music was profound, and he joyfully sang in a quartet, sharing his gift with others.

Luther's interests were as rich and varied as his life. An avid gardener, he found peace and pleasure in the cultivation of his plants. His passion for sports was undeniable, as he was a dedicated fan of NASCAR, the Atlanta Braves, and Auburn University football. Luther also enjoyed the simple pleasures of hunting quail, rabbit, and fishing, activities that connected him to the land he loved so dearly.

Flowers will be accepted or the family suggests that memorials be made in Luther's memory to Chattahoochee Hospice. 

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 18th, 2024, at 2:00P.M. EST at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home chapel with interment following in Harmony Memorial Park. The Reverend Michael Stiggers and the Reverend Randall Hamer officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Radean Walls Poole, 59 of Daviston, AL passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at her residence. Public Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, from 2:00PM CST until 6:00 PM CST at Silmon-Seroyer Funeral Home Chapel, Lafayette, AL.
